THIS IS ELVIS celebrates the life of Elvis through his most incredible moments; events that saw him turn from a Tupelo truck driver into the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Told chronologically in humorous bitesize entries, this tiny time follows Elvis taking care of business from rags to riches, and shows why, half a century on, we still can't help falling in love with him. From his first time in a recording studio in 1953 to the first swivel of those hips in 1956, and from his final movie in 1969 to his famous last words in 1977, this is a compact but comprehensive celebration of the man, the myth and the legend - one epic moment at a time.
Elvis may have left the building but his spirit will always live on. Long live the King!

18 July 1953
Memphis Recording Service, 706 Union Avenue, Memphis
On a Saturday in the summer of 1953, a shy 18-year-old with long sideburns walked into Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service and paid $4 to cut a two-song acetate as a gift for his mother. The songs were "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin". Receptionist Marion Keisker listened to his vocals and jotted down his name with a note for her boss: "Good ballad singer. Hold." Phillips wouldn't call him in until the following summer, but when he did, the rest is history.
"I don't sound like nobody."
Elvis, to Marion Keisker, when she asked Elvis, "Who do you sound like?" As recalled by Marion Keisker in Last Train to Memphis, 1994
