A bold, formally inventive novel that takes a darkly ironic, unflinching look at the psychological fallout of war, and the burden of histories both personal and collective. It follows a nameless Hungarian man from Vojvodina, in modern Serbia, whose sense of self dissolves, amid shifting borders, ethnic violence, and a slow erosion of all meanin

The Carcass Remover is a portrait of a man destroyed by war - The Yugoslav Wars. Srebrenica is never mentioned, yet it may be the unspeakable centre of this man's labyrinthine pattern of stories. A Hungarian from the former Yugoslavia, conscripted to fight for the Serbs, he now haunts the borders of Europe: a traumatized, nameless survivor with chronic digestive issues, his sole virtue the desire to explain himself.

But who is out there to hear his story? In a sense the reader is the ideal listener to this man's desperate, sometimes comic, uncertain monologue - his one hope of a cure, or absolution. This fiercely beautiful anti-war novel not only celebrates the defiance of memory in the face of atrocity but asks what role we as witnesses might play in helping to put a stop to it.
