An illustrated history of the Talyllyn Railway, produced in association with the Talyllyn Railway Company, to mark its 150th anniversary.
The Talyllyn narrow gauge steam railway runs from Tywyn on the Mid Wales coast up to Nant Gwernol near the village of Abergynolwyn. The railway company received royal assent to build the line in 1865 to carry slate from the quarries at Bryn Eglwys to the coast. It was also the first narrow gauge railway authorised to carry passengers. The line remained operational until October 1951, and following a campaign led by railway enthusiast and historian Tom Rolt, it was brought back to life to become the nation's first heritage railway restored by volunteers. Today the railway is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area and carries over 50,000 passengers every year, hauled by its stable of six steam and four diesel narrow gauge locomotives. This special 150th anniversary publication has been produced by Amberley Publishing in association with the Talyllyn Railway Company.
