Reminiscent of his daily religious practice and study of the text, the sutra’s philosophy influences the artist’s compositional choices and defines how Buddhist concepts affect his use of space. A pivotal Mahayana Buddhist scripture, the Diamond Sutra is a core text in the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita) tradition. Through a dialogue between the Buddha and Subhūti—one of the Buddha’s ten principal disciples, foremost in “dwelling in peace”—the text teaches that reality is illusory and empty, revealing profound insights on non-self (anatman) and liberation through non-attachment, impermanence, and emptiness.

Neither meant to illustrate the scripture nor directly support its narrative, Wang Xin’s Diamond Pine depictions carry the gravitas of the sutra’s philosophy by rendering trees that transcend commonly expressed symbolic meanings. While in Chinese culture the pine tree symbolises longevity, endurance, steadfastness, and integrity—often representing noble scholars or gentlemen who remain strong and true despite harsh conditions—Wang’s compositions employ a pictorial language that emphasises the longing for tranquil and peaceful isolation taught by the sutra.

In place of moral fortitude, the pines become vessels for stillness itself, their gnarled forms and sparse, breathing compositions inviting contemplation rather than admiration. The negative space surrounding each tree is as deliberate as the ink strokes that define it, echoing the sutra's teaching that form and emptiness are inseparable.

松樹歷來象徵逆境中的堅韌守心、剛毅不拔與忠貞不渝。在王新筆下，松樹成為清淨寂滅的象徵載體，其蜿蜒的身姿與沉靜空靈的構圖，引導觀者在欣賞之餘進入沉思。每株松樹周圍的留白空間，與勾勒其輪廓的水墨線條一樣，具有相同的用意，呼應了經文所教導的形與空實為一體二面。
