A history of Grimsby

Grimsby Remembered is a fascinating collection of memories gathered from ordinary folk who have lived and worked in the town, during both peace time and war. Through the personal recollections taken from many generations of townspeople, much can be learned about bygone industries, local traditions and leisure pursuits, some of which, sadly may have otherwise been long forgotten in such fast-changing times. I remember walking to school... 'It'll do you good' was my mother's favourite saying. We were able to do the whole route from Manor Avenue to Welholme School via the extensive network of back passages, eight-foots and alleyways. We felt safe and we were safe... sadly, nearly all of the passages are now gated.Children at Littlecoats Junior School used the adjacent field for games. The grass was coarse, the ground uneven, and the brown patches were lethal. The cows you avoided, too. Meet also the foreign sailors and trawler men who smelt of tobacco, Mr Pearson the Cobbler, the nine year old boy who drove a bus to Cleethorpes, and remember the thrill of travellling by steam engine to London.
