Ein ganzes Leben, mehr als ein Dreivierteljahrhundert, wird im Gesprach zwischen Ferdinand Springer und der Kunsthistorikerin Emanuelle Foster lebendig. Von der preussischen Kindheit und Jugend als Sohn eines Berliner Verlegers fuhrt Springers Weg zunachst in die Schweiz und dann nach Mailand und Paris, wo er bei Carlo Carra, Bissiere und Hayter Malerei und Graphik studiert. Er orientiert sich bald in Richtung Abstraktion, durch die er im Laufe der Jahre zum Ausdruck einer sehr personlichen poetischen Innenwelt gelangt. Vor den Augen der Leser entsteht das Bild eines Kunstlerlebens, gepragt von den Umsturzen und Bruchen der Geschichte wie auch von Freundschaften und Begegnungen: mit Wilhelm Uhde, Hans Bellmer, Hans Arp, Sonja Delaunay, Hans Hartung, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva und vielen mehr.
