This fascinating selection of photographs traces some of the many ways in which Chalford has changed and developed over the last century.
Nestled in the Cotswold's aptly named Golden Valley, Chalford is a picture postcard village with a long and fascinating history. Despite being settled nearly 4,000 years ago, it wasn't until an influx of wool and silk weavers in the 17th century that the village truly began to take shape. As the population grew, the narrow valley bottom forced the villagers to build their homes clinging to the sides of the hills, and Chalford became known as the 'Alpine village'. Further expansion came with the opening of the Thames and Severn Canal in 1789 and Chalford became a centre for the manufacture of broadcloth. The industry might be gone, but Chalford, unlike many other industrial settlements, has continued to thrive and today claims to be the largest village in England. Chalford Through Time takes the reader on a journey of the town's proud history, bringing back to life the many milling monuments that still pepper the village's landscape today.
