A groundbreaking survey of one of the pre-eminent painters of the second half of the twentieth century, and her subtle yet powerful art
Canadian-born Agnes Martin (1912–2004) has had a significant influence both on artists of her own time and on subsequent generations. A contemporary of the abstract expressionists, though often identified with minimalism, Martin was one of the few women artists who came to prominence in the predominately masculine art world of the late 1950s and 1960s, and subsequently became an important role model for younger women artists.
This illuminating survey provides an overview of Martin's remarkable career, from her lesser-known early experimental works through to the striped and gridded paintings that became her hallmark, to her use of colour in various formats, her drawings and watercolours, and her final works that reintroduce bold forms. Contextualising her practice alongside her life, relationship with other artists and the influence of South-Asian philosophy, this much-anticipated reissue is an indispensable guide to the work of this visionary, pioneering artist.
